Five Major Casting Technologies You Should Know
2/5/2013

Are you struggling to select a suitable casting technology from various options? Now here, five types of casting technology are offered to help you know them better and simplify your option.

Sand mold casting Just as its name implies, molten metal is poured into a mold cavity formed out of the sand. The sand can be green sand, resin sand or others. Sand casting technology has a wide application range, such as larger parts and smaller parts, say, connecting rods, gears, crankshaft, etc. Sand mould casting advantages First, sand casting makes you save much production cost. This should be due to the cheap sand resource. Another distinct merit may be its wide casting range. Disadvantages Sand casting technology is unfit for mass production; it may cause the worse surface finish, because of sand indentation or oxidizing medium.

Plaster casting Next I want to recommend is the plaster casting. Unlike the sand casting, this casting technology just involves the use of plaster as the mold. The plaster mold usually is made of gypsum or calcium sulfate. It's just right for casting middle or small size parts. Advantages Plaster casting needs short production cycle and no core. It also provides better surface finish and dimensional accuracy. Disadvantages For instance, it's not appropriate to cast the metals with high melting point like high temperature alloy.

Ceramic precision casting Recently, precision casting has drawn customers' attention. Ceramic precision casting, a type of investment casting process is actually formed on the basis of sand casting. Ceramic precision casting technology features low product cost, less procedure, labor or short production cycle. It's worth choosing anyway, regardless of simple or complicate design.

Lost wax casting Lost wax casting is a popular casting process. Speaking of this casting process, it actually has been used for thousands of years. And now, it concentrates on jewelry or sculpture. If you choose this process, you will benefit a lot. Firstly, lost wax casting parts feature great dimensional accuracy. Lost wax casting is suitable for various metals, including titanium alloy, carbon steel, stainless steel, tool steel, and many more. Additionally, it does a great job despite of small scale or large scale production volume.

Lost foam casting This casting precess is much similar to the investment casting. Its procedure includes foam shaping, carving polystyrene, injecting the polystyrene in mold, etc. You also may benefit a lot, due its advantages, like casting parts with high precision, less time and labor. Actually each type has its own features or application ranges. Sometimes, it's hard to make a decision quickly. You may know what you really want after taking many factors into consideration, such astechnical requirement, production volume, production cost, etc.
