Comprehensive Introduction on Forging and Rolling
3/20/2013

In the current, forging process and rolling process are two of most popular industrial technologies. They have differences, but also have connection. Then, this article will give comprehensive introduction on forging and rolling.

First of all, what is forging technology? In fact, it is integration of forging and pressing and relies on hammer of metal forming machinery, anvil block, plunger chip or mould to exert pressure on materials so as to generate plastic deformation. In the end, the wanted shape and size will come into being. During the pressing course, it will realize the plastic deformation based on changing the spatial position of materials. Then, the fork toe is widely applied to processing nonmetal blanks, such as engineering plastic rubber, ceramic, green brick or composite material and so on. When it comes to the rolling process, the metal blank is compressed by roller based on the different intervals of spinning roller. Then, the cross profile and length of materials will be reduced and increased respectively. In general, the rolling technology is the very first choice of steel production. Besides, it is also widely used to produce section bar, panel and tubing.

In forging industry, two most popular loader crane parts are hot forging and cold forging. As to the hot forging, it means the metal blank is forged above the recrystallization temperature. Increasing the processing temperature is good to improve the plasticity of metal as well as the inherent quality of workpiece. In the meantime, high temperature is also helpful to reduce the resistance to deformation of metal. In terms of cold forging, just as its name implies, the metal is forged below the recrystallization temperature. Comparatively speaking, the workpiece generated from cold forging enjoys more precise shape and size as well as surface smoothness. Similarly, the rolling technology can be divided into hot rolling and cold rolling. Hot rolling can destroy the cast structure of steel ingot and refine the crystalline grain of steel as well as eliminate the shortcoming of microstructural. Thus, the mechanical property of steel products will be improved largely. The stem cam is based on hot rolled steel as the raw material, which will be through cold continuous rolling after wiping off the scale cinder. The workpiece made from such a cold rolling enjoys much high intensity and strength.

With the fast development of science and technology, both forging process and rolling process should emphasize improving inner quality of workpiece, enhancing precise technique, advancing the degree of automation and developing the brand-new material.
