Comparison and Contrast Between Forging and Casting |

As is known to all, Forging parts supplier and casting are two main kinds of manufacturing methods in mechanical industry. Truly, forging and casting are very similar in some ways but quite different in others. The similarities and differences between the two metal making processes are analyzed as follows.
1. The Concept
Both forging technology and casting technology play very important roles in modern industry. Metal forging is very common, which means using metal forming machine to put pressure on the metal so as to change the shape of the metal and to obtain the forged parts with designed mechanical properties, shapes and dimensions. Metal casting is different, which means pouring liquid metal into the prepared mold so as to get the parts after cooling and solidification.
2. The History of Development
Both Stem cam and casting have a long history of development. By the end of 1960s, the appearance of powder forging greatly promoted the development of forging. Casting is a metal hot processing technology with a history of about 6,000 years. After the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, casting technology got a fast development with the invention of steamer, textile machine, soldering iron and etc.
3. The Classification
Both forging and casting can be divided into different kinds. There are cold forging and hot forging. Cold forging is doing metal processing under the room temperature while hot forging above the re-crystallization temperature. For casting, there are aluminum sand casting, investment casting, low-pressure casting, gravity casting, and etc.
4. The Raw Materials and Products
For AL shell moulding, carbon steel and alloy steel are used as main raw materials. Some other raw materials, like aluminum, magnesium, copper, titanium and their alloys. For small and large forged parts, round or square bars are used; ingots are only used for large forged parts. For different raw materials, there are strict forging temperature requirements. In Europe, almost 60% forged parts are used in automobile industry. For casting, metals and plastics are used as main raw materials. Sand casting parts are very popular in people's daily life, such as some machine parts.
5. The Advantages
Generally speaking, parts with complicated shapes can be made by forging. Compared with forged parts, casting parts have better mechanical properties, especially the hardness. For example, some essential parts used in aerospace are mainly casting parts.
To draw a conclusion, there are many similarities and differences between forging and casting. However, both of them are very important in industry as well as our life.
